Bloodshed in Gaza could've been avoided

Date published: 8/12/2014

After instigating a war with Israel that resulted in death and destruction to their own people, Hamas has now agreed to a cease-fire.

They could have done this weeks earlier and saved many lives on both sides.

The terms are the same as those presented earlier by the Egyptians. Instead, their leaders sat comfortably in five-star hotels in Qatar while their people suffered.

In short, they accomplished nothing and ended up greatly weakened, leaving behind a trail of blood and misery in Gaza.

This could have been avoided by stopping the rockets into civilian areas in Israel and coming to the peace table.

This is a repeat performance many times over. Insanity is described as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

If the current cease-fire holds and talks begin in Egypt, can we expect any serious improvement in the situation? I hope so, but I hear the admonition of the late brilliant Israeli diplomat Abba Eban: "The Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity."
