In his Aug. 7 letter titled "Highway civility seems to be thing of the past," Bob Buchanan's last sentence asked the question: "Is this the beginning of the end for civilized society?"
The answer is "no." The beginning of the end for civilized society was Jan. 1, 1960.
Several years ago, a Spotsylvanian named John Lawson told me that he and his college friends had discussed this very topic at some length, and their conclusion was that civilization peaked in the 1950s and has been going downhill ever since.
Having been in high school and college in that decade, I concurred, and I believe anyone who grew up in the '40s and '50s would agree.
