Jean Lillian Shrewsbury Riffe, 81, of Locust Grove passed away on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Jean was the daughter of William Shrewsbury and Helen Kingsland Shrewsbury, and was born in Long Branch, N.J. She moved with her parents to Beckley, W.Va. when she was in high school. After graduating from high school, she met Robert Louis Riffe (Bob), and the two were married on Sept. 5, 1951. Bob and Jean then moved to Northern Virginia, eventually settling in Woodbridge to raise their family.
Jean had a long and distinguished civil service career, first working in Washington, D.C., and then later at Fort Belvoir, where she retired in 1986 from the Department of Agriculture.
Jean was very active in the Lake of the Woods Church and the Eastern Star where she made lifelong friends. A longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Occoquan Chapter No. 59, she held many offices including Worthy Matron, serving alongside her husband, Bob.
Jean is survived by four sons, Robert L. Riffe Jr., Brian D. Riffe, Timothy W. Riffe and Steven G. Riffe; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, with a new great-grandchild due in September.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Robert Louis Riffe (Bob); her sister, Betty Shrewsbury Plattenberg; and her brother, William Shrewsbury.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, at the Lake of the Woods Church in Locust Grove. A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, also at the Lake of the Woods Church, in Locust Grove. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Lemay will officiate.
