Dorothy C. Powell

Dorothy Campbell Powell, 89, of Fullerton, Calif., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, in the Park Vista Skilled Nursing Facility in Fullerton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, S. Talmadge Powell and her parents, Ida and Stephen Campbell.

In her formative years, Dorothy was an amateur golf champion, and her love of the game continued throughout her life. Dorothy's fondest memory of golf was playing in a Pro-Am tournament in light snow at Pebble Beach, Calif., where she was paired with professional golfer JoAnne Carner.

After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis, Dorothy went to work for the U.S. State Department, handling payroll duties for the U.S. Embassy in Paris. It was in this position that she met her husband, Tal Powell, who was serving in the U.S. Foreign Service. Dorothy and Tal were married in Frankfurt, Germany, in January 1953. Later that year they moved back to the States, where they settled first in Dorothy's hometown of St. Louis, and later in Moraga, Calif. After spending years at home raising two children, Dorothy returned to the workforce, serving for more than 20 years as an employment development specialist for the state of California.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Linda Powell Wandres of Fredericksburg; her son, Alan Douglas Powell of Fullerton; and her beloved granddaughters, Jenna Marie Wandres of Mountain View, Calif., and Laura Elyse Wandres of Madison, Wis.

A memorial service will be held in St. Louis on Aug. 23.
