AP - The College of William & Mary President Gene Nichol said he is resigning from his post, effective immediately.
Nichol's decision was outlined in an e-mail to the university community on Tuesday after he was advised Sunday that his contract would not be renewed in July.
Nichol has come under fire from some alumni, students, politicians and community members who have criticized his decisions during his almost three years on the job.
During his tenure, Nichol removed the cross from permanent display in the school's chapel to make students and visitors of non-Christian faiths feel more welcome. The cross could be put back upon request.
Most recently, he was criticized for allowing an art show featuring sex workers to be held on the Williamsburg campus.

As a student of the college, I am appalled by your attacks on
my president. Gene Nichol is a courageous, principled man
and a great leader and representative of the college. I am
dismayed about the narrow-minded way he has been
portrayed in the media, and especially this newspaper.

As an alum of W&M, I can say this guy was an embarrassment. On top of that, he is a crybaby abandoning his post. But, I guess we should be glad to be rid of him - the sooner the better.

They're adults, whether or not they behave like them. Sex has long been married to the arts. Heck, sex is associated with selling everything from cars to yogurt in our country. These idiots probably could've seen something more risqué on Desperate Houswives. Grow up!

This Gene Nichol needs to be in charge of a nudist colony, not a college.

It's crazy that he's been vilified for being so open and welcoming to all faiths and walks of life. I'm afraid America's schools are in danger of becoming Christian madrassas.
It's also crazy how so many religious people are actively undermining freedom of religion.
