Falmouth intersection to be funded

Money set aside today for construction of a $21.1 million urban interchange over the next six years.

Date published: 4/16/2008

By Kelly Hannon Relief may at last be on the way for the congested Falmouth intersection of U.S. 1, Warrenton Road (Business 17) and Butler Road in southern Stafford County.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board, meeting in Lynchburg today, agreed to a draft budget to fund construction of a $21.1 million urban interchange over the next six years.

The Stafford Board of Supervisors supports a design that would allow traffic to flow freely from Interstate 95 and Warrenton Road to Butler Road via an overpass.

Underneath, U.S. 1 traffic would be c0ntrolled by a traffic signal. That traffic would have access to Warrenton Road and Butler Road via ramps.

The project has been in the design phase since last year.

Once the construction funding receives final approval, the project would take about six years to build.

I would agree with Life. (posted by soon2bteacher , Apr. 18, 2008 12:05 pm)
Six years IS better than no fix at all. I've had to deal with this intersection almost everyday since I moved here 7 years ago. I'm willing to wait another 6 years if they are finally going to fix it.

Life..I think you are misreading the comments here.. (posted by freedomfirst , Apr. 17, 2008 11:27 am)
I think we all agree that the work is needed, but if you use that road every day, your life will definitely take a turn for the worse for awhile. And sitting in traffic an extra 5-10-15 minutes each way 5 days a week is a pain, both in the butt and in the wallet. And besides, perhaps the local politicos should consider looking at alternative transportation methods than more/better roads for cars. Mark my words, before it is all done gasoline will be $10 and more a gallon. Then what????

This is a good thing so (posted by lifeisbeautiful , Apr. 17, 2008 6:37 am)
why is everyone so negative? Six years is better than no fix at all. Let's just be thankful it's getting fixed. I read that the Primmer House Road situation is do to the Maryland company that was in charge of the work.

This is great news...but.. (posted by freedomfirst , Apr. 16, 2008 9:23 pm)
During the 6 years they'll be building this bridge, traffic will be exponentially worse at this intersection than it is now. Maybe they should dig a tunnel instead. Probably cheaper too.

Finally (posted by wideopenspace , Apr. 16, 2008 7:18 pm)
This type of system is on the Ohio-Kentucky border at Ashland, KY and it works great. It's not exactly the same but it is close and does an excellent job of merging traffic, then again we have a bunch of idiots driving so a mess is still inevitable.
