Two dead in single-car crashes

Separate accidents claim lives of 19-year-old man and 8-year-old boy

An 8-year-old Remington boy and a 19-year-old Bealeton man were killed in separate single-car accidents Friday night and Saturday morning.

Neither was wearing a seat belt, said Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police.

About 10:20 p.m., 8-year-old Orion Bickings was killed when the car he was in ran off Lakota Road less than a mile west of Clover Hill Road in Culpeper County, Tyler said.

The car veered to the left, went over an embankment and through a wooden fence, and rolled several times.

The child was ejected and died at the scene.

Neither the driver of the 1999 Acura, 38-year-old Fielding Taylor Kines, nor a 5-year-old child in the car was injured.

The driver and the 5-year-old properly restrained, Tyler said. He said it is unclear where the 8-year-old was sitting when the crash occurred.

Orion Bickings is the son of Kines’ girlfriend, Tyler said.

Kines was charged with felony involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license, Tyler said.

Trooper J.K. Hathaway investigated the accident.

In the other fatality, Rue Edward McGee III died after the after the 1996 Ford truck he was driving ran off the road about 12:30 Saturday morning and struck a utility pole and a tree, Tyler said.

Investigating Trooper R. A. Stiltner determined that the 19-year-old was driving too fast to negotiate a curve on State Route 846 in Fauquier County.

“Not wearing seat belts or placing children in proper restraint seats seems to be the cause of most fatalities,” Tyler said.
