Two members of a New Jersey family were killed and another member injured in an early morning crash near a state paving project on Interstate 95 today.

The crash occurred about 1:45 a.m., near milepost 145 in Stafford County.

Southbound vehicles were slowing down and merging near the paving work zone, State Police Sgt. L.E. Tyler said.

A tractor-trailer had slowed when it was struck in the rear by a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Peter W. Baubles, 64, of Manasquan, N.J., Tyler said.

The driver died at the scene. Also killed was Colin M. Baubles, 21, also of Manasquan. Peter E. Baubles, 23, was flown from the crash to the Washington Trauma Center. His condition was not known.

Tyler said none of those in the car was wearing a seat belt.

There were no injuries in the tractor-trailer, Tyler said.

No charges have been filed, Tyler said. The crash is being investigated by Trooper J.C. Jeanty.

Electronic message boards were posted miles before the work zone, alerting motorists to the paving operations and traffic delays, said Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Tina Bundy.

Last year, 11 people were killed in Virginia highway work zones. Ten of the victims were motorists.

“It’s just as dangerous for those motorists to drive through those areas as it is for the people out working on the road,” Bundy said.
