Police brief
REWARD OFFERED
UMW is offering a reward of $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the successful arrest and conviction of the suspect. The money is being provided by private funds from an anonymous donor. RELATED: UMW BULLET Date published: 10/3/2008
A University of Mary Washington student was violently sexually assaulted early this morning at the south end, third level of the school's parking deck, according to an emergency email sent out by the school.
University spokeswoman Teresa Mannix said the woman had just parked her car in the garage and was walking toward campus when she was attacked. The victim, a sophomore who lives on campus, did not know her attacker, the school said. The email describes the suspect as a white male with a "buzz type" haircut and a "tribal" tattoo on his upper left arm. He wore a green T-shirt and jeans. Marty Morrison, a school spokesperson, said the suspect is 20 to 24 years old with light-colored hair, green eyes and a soft, high-pitched voice. The investigating officer from the UMW Police Department was with the victim at Mary Washington Hospital this morning. She was released this afternoon, Mannix said. Mannix said the school has increased patrols on campus, with extra UMW officers, Fredericksburg officers and the State Police all helping out. There are no security cameras in the garage, Mannix said, but the school plans on adding security after this morning’s incident. She said the school has contracted indefinitely with a security firm that will now patrol the parking deck every day from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. UMW Police are investigating the case with help from Fredericksburg Police. The school asks anyone with information to call the UMW Police Department at 654-1025. Today's reported assault comes more than two months after another woman reported being attacked near the UMW track. ( Victim recounts attack.) In the earlier case, the woman, who is in her 20s and is not a UMW student, was running on the trail around the athletic fields on Hanover Street when a man with a gun grabbed her and pushed her into the bushes. The attacker tried to tie the woman's hands together and when she resisted, he dropped the gun, police spokesperson Natatia Bledsoe said. She said the man got flustered and ran away. The attacker in the July 10 incident is described as white and in his late 20s, with very short brown hair and curls in the front. He is 6 feet, 2 inches and 250 pounds and was last seen wearing black shorts and a white T-shirt. Because of the different suspect descriptions, Mannix said, "We are convinced that [today's incident] is not related to the attempted assault in July." Police are supposed to be psychic? Goodness. Not a surprising attitude however.
and opinion corrected. Thanks.
The quote you referenced came from the University's spokesperson, not from FPD.
Seems a bit early in the investigation for the FPD to be "convinced" of anything. Best wishes to the victim for a quick recovery.
