Police say woman drove drunk with kids

December 22, 2008 12:00 am

A Spotsylvania woman faces numerous charges after authorities say she was stopped for driving the wrong way on Marye Road Saturday night with three children in the car.

First Sgt. Liz Scott of the Sheriff's Office said Helen A. Shaw of Bumpass had a preliminary blood alcohol content of .232 when she was pulled over at 10:30 p.m. by Deputy C. Carey.

Shaw is charged with driving while suspended, DWI, three counts of child abuse/neglect and two counts of assault on a law-enforcement officer.

She was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

Scott said Carey responded to the Marye Road area after receiving a report of a reckless driver.

While driving, Carey noticed a vehicle heading toward him in his lane of travel. Carey pulled over to get out of the vehicle's way, then turned around and pulled Shaw over.

Scott said Shaw initially gave Carey an incorrect name and date of birth.

Carey noticed that Shaw smelled strongly of alcohol as she spoke, and she failed several field sobriety tests, Scott said.

After Carey arrested Shaw for DWI, Scott said Shaw began to resist and pulled away from Carey.

After Carey got handcuffs on Shaw, Scott said, the woman kicked Carey and another deputy who had arrived to help.

Scott said Shaw's troubles continued when she was brought to the magistrate's office after her arrest.

"She became argumentative and vocalized several phrases of vulgarity at the magistrate," Scott said. Shaw was eventually removed from the office because of her demeanor.

"It just kind of got worse and worse for her that night," Scott said.

The children's father, who had not been in Shaw's car, picked up the children.
