A Spotsylvania County man was charged with malicious wounding in the beating of a 2-year-old yesterday, after the toddler’s 7-year-old brother called 911 from a neighbor’s house to say his sister was unconscious.
1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrived at the family’s Dublin Court home and found the girl unresponsive.
When they began to question Richard Bundy, 50, the children’s grandmother’s husband, he told deputies that the child collapsed on her own after having an accident in her pants.
But hospital evaluations told a different story, police say.
Authorities found extensive bleeding from the girl’s brain and her right pupil blown.
The injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma, Scott said.
She said the girl's brother also told police that he saw his grandmother's husband strike the toddler in the head, knocking her unconscious and that’s when he ran to a neighbor’s house to call police.
Scott said the children’s grandmother, who has custody of them, was not at home during the incident and has been extremely cooperative with police.
The 2-year-old girl is now at Inova Hospital in Fairfax in the pediatric intensive care unit, where she is listed in critical condition, Scott said.
She said the girl, who does not have skull fractures, but does have a swollen brain, is still undergoing neurological testing.
Scott said as Detective Twyla DeMoranville tried to interview Bundy, but he began to threaten her as well as the 7-year-old boy.
He was charged with malicious wounding, felony child abuse and threatening a police officer and is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
