Stafford woman charged in teen's death

A Stafford County woman has been charged with felony murder as the result of a New Year’s Eve party following which an 18-year-old woman died.

Date published: 8/21/2009

A Stafford County woman has been charged with felony murder as the result of a New Year’s Eve party following which an 18-year-old woman died.

Samantha Candy Marie Gehman, 39, of 800 Greentree Road is also charged with three counts of distributing Oxycontin. She was arrested Wednesday after being indicted by a special grand jury Monday, Sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy said.

Jessica Lynn Proffitt, a 2007 graduate of King George High School, died Jan. 2 at Mary Washington Hospital. A medical examiner ruled the cause of death as “acute opiate toxicity.”

According to Kennedy, deputies went to the Days Inn at 14 Simpson Road after Proffitt’s boyfriend called 911 and reported that she was unresponsive and not breathing. Deputies performed CPR and took the victim to the hospital.

The investigation revealed that Gehman, Proffitt and two males rented a room at the motel to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Gehman, who worked part time for an elderly woman in Fauquier County, provided Oxycontin during the party.

Police searched the room and found 80 Oxycontin pills. The drugs had been prescribed to the spouse of the person who hired Gehman to care for the woman, Kennedy said.

Gehman is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

No, I Wasn't There (posted by relichunter , Aug. 21, 2009 9:50 pm)
I wasn't at the Twin Towers either, didn't know the terrorist or their families either. Does that mean that I shouldn't have an opinion on the case? Why did she have drugs that belonged to the spouse of her employer? Why did she bring the drugs with her? The other two males didn't bring these drugs. If there was evidence they broke the law, I'm sure they would have been indicted too. Teenagers do a lot of things that a 38 year old should know better than to do. They rely on those older to be smarter.

Taxpayer (posted by tuff1spotsy , Aug. 21, 2009 9:44 pm)
This woman is lucky! in some states if you commit a felony (ANY felony) and someone dies in the process of you committing that felony you get charged with Capital Murder! and that means the death penalty... too bad we live in a commonwealth

You don't know all the facts (posted by Boo2U , Aug. 21, 2009 7:23 pm)
Relichunter, you weren't there, do you know the people involved? Do you know the families involved? If not, then you have no right to judge who was involved. Nobody forced her to take those pills and you don't know what happened. The only ones who know what really happened are the ones who were there. Why don't they go after the two other guys who were there? Why just one person? I'm sure they had just as much to do with this if not more.

You're absolutely right RelicHunter! (posted by hes1973a , Aug. 21, 2009 5:24 pm)
I hope this story will put some "scare" into our youth and curious or partying set who don't see anything wrong with taking drugs "socially". Drugs are bad. Drugs kill. If you offer drugs to others and they die after taking them, you have murdered that person.

Really, Taxpayer ??? (posted by relichunter , Aug. 21, 2009 4:37 pm)
I'm sure you'd feel much, much different if it was your daughter who was dead. What makes this person different than the drug dealer selling herion on the corner? Just because she gave it away? If she didn't bring it and offer it, this girl would probably be alive today.
