Family dog kills Orange County toddler

Pit bull euthanized after 2-year-old Orange girl dies from attack

Date published: 9/28/2009

BY ROBIN KNEPPER

A 23-month-old Orange County girl was attacked and killed by her family’s pet pit bull Sunday evening.

The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the child’s name at the family’s request. The family told the Sheriff’s Office it would issue a statement later today.

The dog, which was chained, had been a family pet for 10 years, the Sheriff's Office said in a press release. Sheriff Mark Amos said his office had not received any previous complaints about the dog.

According to Amos, the family lives in the Mountain Track Road area in the southern part of the county.

The child, who would have been two years old next month, was found a short distance from the family home, Amos said. The mother told deputies she had been preoccupied for a short period of time, then noticed the child was not in the house and went to look for her.

A family member found the child where the dog had attacked her.

The Sheriff's Office received a call around 6:40 p.m. When deputies arrived, they found the girl unresponsive, with multiple injuries over her body, according to the news release.

The girl was transported to the University of Virginia Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:11 p.m.

The family surrendered the dog to Animal Control and it was euthanized.

According to Amos, the investigation is ongoing and no decision about charges has been made.

Pit Bulls (posted by GaryShorts , Oct. 4, 2009 9:52 pm)
I wonder what was preoccupying the mother so much that she had to let the pit bull babysit. Michael Vick got 23-months in federal prison and no 23-month old got killed. I wonder if in this case those responsible will even get a month.

Another tragedy. (posted by Doglover99 , Sep. 29, 2009 10:58 am)
Again, I am very sorry to read that another child was the victim of this attack that could have been so EASILY been prevented had the dog not been on a chain. When are people going to learn/listen that dogs want to be a part of the human pack, socialize the dog, train it and make it a part of the family. CHAINS BREAK HEARTS...again..no matter the breed, unchain the dogs and bring them into the house. My heart goes out to the family..for sure, but also to the dog.

Still fc06? (posted by Bad1Jetta , Sep. 28, 2009 11:35 pm)
You comprehend my post? Yet you ask me to answer the question, what kind of dog. Guess you missed the first sentence in my response. Maybe you should read this. http://www.austinlostpets.com/kidskorner/2October/pitbull.htm

It is cruel to chain up a dog.

No dogs and toddlers should be left alone, together.. (posted by anonymus , Sep. 28, 2009 11:23 pm)
Pit bulls can be the greatest dogs, but they require intelligent owners. Pomeranians, too.
