A Caroline County man has been charged in the shooting death of a Spotsylvania County man early Saturday morning, police said.

Police received a call to the home off Lafayette Boulevard from a woman who reported someone had been shot, but was still breathing. The suspect, she said, had fled the home.

Deputies arrived and found Jason Thomas Jett, 27, had sustained two gunshot wounds, one to the abdomen and one to the upper left side of his body, police said.

His wife told authorities they were having a party with many people in the home when she and Jason got into an argument, police said.

The argument became heated, police said, and 23-year-old Lawrence Dale Toler Jr. tried to intervene, police said. Police say Jason Jett went into the kitchen and tried to get a firearm.

Toler and Jason Jett struggled over the gun, police said, and the weapon discharged, striking Jett twice.

One of the bullets also struck another person at the party, who fled to a local business and contacted the Sheriff's Office.

Police say Toler also called police and then fled the home.

Jett was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The second injured person was treated for a superficial wound and was released.

Toler turned himself in to police later that night. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

Police say four children, ages 3 to 9, were in the home at the time of the incident. They have been placed in the care of social services.
