In a split second, a massive explosion ripped through Embrey Dam on the Rappahannock
River on Monday, February 23, 2004. But the blast will have a lasting impact on the
river, which will run free for the first time in more than a century and a half.
Own a memento of this once-in-a-lifetime event.
"River Runs Free: Breaching the Rappahannock's Embrey Dam," charts the history
of the dam in a full-color book produced by The Free Lance–Star. The 48-page
volume includes scenic and documentary photographs and essays about
the dam and the river.
The book sells for $15, with a $3 donation from the sale of each book
to Friends of the Rappahannock, a local river conservation group.
