Chapter 3:
Howdy to Hoodoos
- What’s a hoodoo? How did you learn the definition by reading the story? How else could you have found what a hoodoo is?
- What’s a search engine? The Internet is an important part of the students’ search for answers to FreeZee’s clues. How have they used it so far? Find stories in the newspaper about other ways in which the Internet plays an important part in our lives today.
- We meet Sluppy D again in this chapter. What is your impression of him as you see more of him? Why does Amber call him “Mr. Personality”?
- How long does it take the team to fly from Connecticut to Utah? (Remember they change time zones during their flight!) Locate the places the team travels on a classroom map.
ADVANCED ACTIVITIES
- Reread the discussion Ms. Roosevelt and Amber have about the right of free speech as part of the First Amendment. Define “free speech” in your own words. Find several examples of people practicing their right of free speech in your newspaper.
- What are some of the ways people have to express their opinions so they can share them with others? What parts of the newspaper allow people to express their individual opinions? Are there similar opportunities with radio and television? How does the use of the Internet allow people to express themselves and share opinions? Are there ways to share opinions without directly using the media?
