Chapter 2:
Day of Discovery
- In what part of the newspaper was FreeZee’s first clue located? What would he have had to do to get the newspaper to print the clue in this section? Who generally provides the items found in this part of the paper? What other information can you find in the Classifieds of your newspaper?
- A good writer can share a lot of information in a few well-chosen words. You meet FreeZee and Sluppy D for the first time in this chapter. And you find out some things about the members of the scavenger hunt team. From what you know now, what words would you use to describe these main characters of our story? Which of these individuals do you think you would like to work with on a project?
- What does Latisha mean by “WiFi world”? Make a list of the technological gadgets in the group’s toolbox as they are revealed to you throughout the story. Check the newspaper to find these items for sale and keep a running total of the value of the items if FreeZee had bought them all at local stores.
ADVANCED ACTIVITIES
- Are you familiar with the two authors — Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain — who are part of the clue for this chapter? What did the students learn about these two writers when they were solving the clue? Why do you suppose FreeZee wanted the students to learn about these two Americans?
- Can you decode FreeZee’s text message at the end of this chapter? Why do people often use this type of coded language when using text messaging on a cell phone? In what other situations are various codes used? How do people learn the codes? Who is most likely to learn to use the codes well?
