Chapter 4:
Key to Success
- When was Harry S. Truman the president of the United States? Why was his home in Key West called “The Little White House”? What well-known American writer is also strongly associated with Key West?
- Check out the weather map in today’s newspaper for information about Key West. How does it compare to the current weather in your community? Why is Key West said to have a tropical climate?
- Of the three places the team has been so far, which would you most like to visit? Why? Make a contrast chart that shows several ways in which the three places differ.
- This chapter mentions one food that is well known in Key West. What is it? What other foods do you think might be quite popular and common in this area? On what are you basing your assumptions?
ADVANCED ACTIVITIES
- What is the mood or tone of the story at the beginning of this chapter? Sometimes writers give clues about what is to come in a story. What unanswered questions remain at the end of this chapter? Do you have any guesses about what is going to happen?
- What is meant by the “right of assembly”? Have you ever seen people gathering to protest or share an opinion — either in person or in the news? Did you agree with the opinions they were sharing? How did you feel about their right to let the public know their opinions on the issue?
