Chapter 5:
Comedy of Hairs

  1. Dogs rule in this chapter. How does Myron manage to escape from the airport doghouse? (How do airports usually keep pets?)  Does he escape because he is clever or because he is lucky?

  2. Ms Roosevelt says Myron is going to be in the doghouse when he is literally in the airport doghouse. She is using this word figuratively. In your own words, can you explain what she means? Can you think of other examples of words that have both a literal and a figurative meaning?

  3. Why is Ms. Roosevelt ready to give up the scavenger hunt and return to Limestone? How do the students feel about this? What would you have done if you were in her place?

  4. Why do you suppose there is a statue of Patsy Ann on Juneau’s dock? What statues are you familiar with in your town or region? Why do people place statues of people (and animals) in public places?

ADVANCED ACTIVITIES

  1. Does Myron know who is causing the team’s bad luck? Glance back over this chapter. Are there any clues that might help you guess who is making problems for the students?

  2. What does Myron mean when he says that winning is a way of showing that they are worthy of the gift of a new school? Why do the students want to prove that they are worthy? Have you ever wanted to prove to someone that you were worthy of something? How did you go about this? Can you think of examples you have seen in the newspaper or on television where people are trying to prove themselves? How did you feel about their efforts?
