Chapter 6:
Catch of the Day
- Were you surprised by the events of this chapter? How do Ms. Roosevelt and the team set up Sluppy D? Assign the parts of the various characters in this chapter to different class members and act out the scene when Sluppy D gets caught. How do you think this part of the story would work as a television program?
- Can you think of other phrases that mean something similar to “brain freeze”? Have you ever been in a situation where you felt as if you were suffering from brain freeze? What are some of the things the scavenger hunt team does to break through their difficult moments in solving the clues? What techniques do you and your classmates use when you have difficult problems to solve?
- Why does Ms. Roosevelt say she gives Myron’s plan an A-minus? Do you think she is serious, or is she teasing Myron?
ADVANCED ACTIVITIES
- When did Hawaii become a state? Did you know the islands were originally ruled by kings and queens? What other facts do you know about Hawaii? In what ways is Hawaii different from the other 49 states? Make a Hawaii fact sheet with information gathered from classmates and research sources.
- The United States is made up of people who come from many different backgrounds and cultures. In this chapter the Tlingit Indians of Alaska and the Hawaiian kings and queens are mentioned. Look in your newspaper for other examples of Americans with varied backgrounds and cultures.
