Chapter 7:
Statues of Liberty

  1. The clue for this chapter’s destination refers to “the father of TV” and the “father of our country”. What does the word “father” mean when it is used in this context? What other “fathers” of this sort can you name? What about “mothers”?

  2. Where is the National Statuary Hall Collection? What else is in the same building? Why do you suppose this collection is housed here? Why do you think each state is allowed to provide only two statues?

  3. Latisha and Myron jokingly suggest a couple of well-known Californians when they ask about states’ contributions to the Collection. Who are they? What current newsmakers in your state would you someday expect might have statues placed somewhere?

ADVANCED ACTIVITIES

  1. Find the names of the two people who represent your state in the National Statuary Hall Collection. Why do you think they were chosen? Do some research to find out more about where these people spent most of their lives. Are there institutions in your state that bear their names?

  2. The right to petition means that people have the right to let the government and others know about their grievances. How does this right work with the other rights outlined in the First Amendment?
