Parents, does your child’s school subscribe to The Free Lance-Star? If so, he or she is able to read the newspaper digitally every day!
In addition, your child’s teacher may also receive print copies of the paper to use in class. We encourage students to hop onto a computer
and read the paper if they have a few extra minutes. All school computers will allow your child to log on to and read The Free Lance-Star.
Plus, the digital e-edition allows students to read any newspaper from 2008 through today, and students also have free access to our tablet
website, www.freelancestar.com, and our local community news source, fredericksburg.com.

Why should your child’s school subscribe to The Free Lance-Star?
The Free Lance-Star is a textbook that changes daily and includes:
• LOCAL connections to students’ lives
• A variety of reading levels
• Authentic models of narrative, expository & persuasive writing
• Non-fiction test format
• Pictures, graphs & maps
• Real-world examples that add relevancy to teachers’ lessons
Also, using newspapers in the classroom increases student test scores. In 2003, a University of Michigan study compared reading scores from schools in 22 cities (big & small) that used newspapers regularly with schools that did not use newspapers.
In all cities, the results were the same: 10% increase in reading test scores.
The more newspapers were used throughout the year, the greater the gain. The greatest increase was gained by middle school students.
In schools with higher percentages of low-income, non-English speaking or minority student populations, the increase in test scores was as much as 29%!

Schools have several affordable purchasing options, including:
E-edition subscription - $50.00 a year for elementary schools and $75.00 a year for middle and high schools.
Print copies – 5 cents per copy; teachers may order copies for the entire school year or for set dates that coincide with a special project.
Contact your child’s teacher and ask him or her to subscribe to The Free Lance-Star!
