Only $5 for 5 months

The Cannon Ridge Golf Club in Stafford County will close temporarily while the owner of the land seeks a new operator to run the course.

Cannon Ridge members were told about the immediate closing at a Wednesday afternoon meeting run by the people who have operated the course since it opened in 2003.

Deane Beman designed the 18-hole course in the Celebrate Virginia North development off U.S. 17 and was a principal in the business with Gary Schaal. Cannon Ridge was one of three courses once envisioned in Celebrate Virginia North but is the only one that has been built.

The operators of Cannon Ridge lease the land where the course is located from Silver Cos. CEO Larry Silver. The facility is also home to the Virginia Golf Trail’s headquarters.

Silver officials are now meeting with other golf course operators interested in taking over the lease and running the course, said Jud Honaker, the company’s president of commercial development.

Honaker said there has been considerable interest from other operators in Cannon Ridge, which many local golfers consider one of the best courses in the region.

Honaker hopes that a deal can be worked out soon and expects that the course will reopen sometime around March when the weather improves. The course will be maintained in the meantime.

It’s unclear how pre-payments made by Cannon Ridge members will be handled. Honaker said that is the responsibility of the previous course operators, not the land owner.
