Sgt. Nicholas Mason
Sgt. Nicholas Conan Mason, 20, of King George County was killed in action on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004. He was a soldier in the Army National Guard, a member of the 229th in Fredericksburg. He was detailed to the 276th of West Point and died serving his country in Iraq. Sgt. Mason also served as a member of the King George Volunteer Fire Department.
Nick was a 2002 honor graduate of King George High School where he was a star wrestler, cross-country runner and track athlete. He was also active in numerous clubs and other activities. He completed his freshman year at Virginia Tech and was preparing for his sophomore year before being called to active duty.
Nick is survived by his parents, Vic and Christine Mason and his sister, Carley, of the home; his grandparents, Rudolf and Sieglinde Vogel and Jane Mason; aunts and uncles from King George, Dieter and Nicki Vogel, Michael and Lori Vogel and Harold and Diddle Vogel; his cousins, Sean, Michael and David Vogel; his aunt and uncle from North Carolina, Susan and Dick Jones; and cousins, Taylor and Elliott Jones.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Elwood Mason.
The Army National Guard and his family will be issuing a joint public statement with details regarding a public memorial service and a private burial.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a memorial/scholarship fund of which details will be made available shortly.
