After a new study found that reading losses, particularly for low-income students and those with learning disabilities may have reached 30 percent during the pandemic, alarm bells should be ringing in local school divisions where the third grade reading scores were already too low before the pandemic.


Reading expert Lucy Calkins acknowledge that she is moving away from the cuing system, even stating that “there is a moment when phonics knowledge should be prioritized—the moment when the child encounters an unfamiliar word.”
