Favorites, players to follow at the PGA Tour's 3M Open

Golf's majors are complete for 2022 and the focus turns to the chase for the FedExCup Playoffs for PGA Tour pros.

Cameron Smith's sizzling 64 to close out the British Open on Sunday propelled him to a 20-under-par finish, a shot better than Cameron Young and two better than Rory McIlroy. Smith's effort was the lowest winning score in relation to par in major history.  

The tour travels from St. Andrews, Scotland to Minneapolis for this week's 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. The par-71 course measures 7,431 yards and features a bevy of water hazards. Steady drives and aggressive approaches will be rewarded. The greens here can be had.

The field is highlighted by three top-25 players, No. 14 Hideki Matsuyama, No. 17 Tony Finau and No. 24 Sungjae Im.

You can watch the action starting Thursday (7:45 a.m.- 2 p.m., ESPN+; 2-6 p.m., Golf Channel), Friday (7:45 a.m.- 2 p.m., ESPN+; 2-6 p.m., GC), Saturday (1-3 p.m., GC/ESPN+; 3-6 p.m., CBS) and Sunday (1-3 p.m., GC/ESPN+; 3-6 p.m., CBS).

No luck of the Irish for us handicapping at the British. Pick to win Shane Lowry finished T-21. Top-5 choice Dustin Johnson was T-6. Top-10 wager Louis Oosthuizen missed the cut.

The favorite: Tony Finau (+1100)

Finau was T-3 here two years ago. He is one of just eight players to make the cut in all three years of this event. Finau has been on the cusp of victory twice this season with a runner-up finish at the RBC Canadian Open and T-2 at the Mexico Open at Vidanta. He also was T-4 at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Pick to win: J.T. Poston (+4000)

Poston collected his second career win on Tour at the John Deere Classic on July 4 weekend. He was second at the Travelers Championship the week prior. He boasts four top-10s in 2022, including a T-3 at the RBC Heritage. Nice price for a guy with some momentum.

Top 5: Brendan Steele (+800)

Steele is as consistent as they come with the big stick and is among the leaders in strokes gained: off the tee. He's hit the top-10 twice in his last three tournaments and this feels like a good place to make it three of four.

Top 10: Cameron Champ (+550)

The defending 3M champion hasn't had much success recently, missing five straight cuts. But he was T-10 at the Masters and T-6 in Mexico. The longest driver on Tour could bomb his way into contention again this week.
