ANDREW SHURTLEFF/THE DAILY PROGRESS Virginia pitcher Griff McGarry (25) throws a pitch during the game against Georgia Tech Saturday in Charlottesville.

Right-hander Griff McGarry will be Virginia’s opening day starter against No. 2 Vanderbilt on Friday, coach Brian O'Connor announced Wednesday.

Freshman right-hander Mike Vasil will get the ball the following day against No. 17 TCU, and junior right-hander Noah Murdock will start the final game of Wahoos' opening weekend series in Arizona against No. 24 Cal State Fullerton.

“Griff has earned this opportunity,” O’Connor said. “But it doesn’t necessarily always mean that the next weekend or the weekend after it's going to play this way.”

McGarry, a sophomore, had flashes of brilliance in what was an erratic 2018. He finished the season with an 8.15 ERA in 11 appearances, including two starts. He had 22 strikeouts in 17.2 innings.
